Kids and the importance of wearing a mouth guard

When it comes to our kids, we really want the world for them, don’t we? I mean we want to be there for them at all times, and do whatever it takes to protect them.

If you have an active boy, like I do, you are just never sure on when accident is going to strike. You just know it will. (Don’t remind me of the time Isak skateboarded  in his Crocs and ended up with a broken shoulder.)

So when I browsed the #American Dental Association’s website (http://www.ada.org/) and came across a video where  Dr. Maria Lopez Howell talked about the impact a hockey puck or a baseball can have to the teeth, I couldn’t agree more. It is essential to wear a mouth guard even from a young age. It’s actually even more important that you make sure your kids get used to wearing them already from the time they start to do anything even remotely dangerous. (Of course I didn’t see this coming when Isak put his Crocs on and headed for the door…)

However, what got me thinking was that we shouldn’t limit this to organized sports. What if your child is off on his or her own, doing something like roller skating, skiing, biking, basket ball, hockey on the pond…are you getting what I’m getting at? It can happen anywhere at any time. Not wearing a mouth guards in situations likely to end up in a dental injury is like jumping off a cliff with no parachute: Only hoping that you will land with no injuries.

Of course I understand the dilemma that mouth guards are not likely to be worn if they are uncomfortable, bulky and prevents breathing, talking and really just hurts? No kid wants that, no matter how much you plead with him or her.

But since you have read this, you realize that there is an alternative and that is our mouth guard, the Protech Dent™ Mouth Guard. It’s super thin, allows for breathing, talking and is even up to 30% stronger than conventional mouth guards. And it comes in seven cool colors, so the kids can flash an Intense Red smile or a Charcoal Black grin.

Really, there is no reason for dental injuries with proper protection, but we have to teach the kids the right way from the start or else they will never like to wear a mouth guard.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments on this blog. I’ll talk to you soon.

Germ Free Sports Mouth Guard Study

Viggy looked around in the locker room and counted 5 players in total showing up for practice.

“Where is everyone?”

“A bunch of players are sick”

“OK, but we have the big game tomorrow. How are we supposed to be on top of this with more than half of the team down under the covers?”

“Either we go out there and get slammed.”

“Or?”

“Or we forfeit the game.”

“Great. That’s not why I put in all these hours in practice and preparations.”

Viggy turned away in disappointment and started thinking. She had heard from other teams the same thing this season. Tons of players were out sick. What was it that made everyone sick at the same time? Sure, germs are everywhere, but this was getting totally ridiculous. And for a ambitious varsity player with a potential college scholarship within reach, a forfeited game was just not on the table.

Believe it or not, but this was the start of why Viggy Parr, a high school junior, started to look at potential sources for germs in sports. And she found one common denominator; The mouth guard.

When you think about it, it all seems very simple. A conventional mouthguard with a poor fit, bulky and uncomfortable will simply not stay in the mouth. If it doesn’t fall out by itself, the athlete will most likely take it out to speak, drink or even to breathe. Not only does this defeat the purpose of why you use a mouth guard all together, but also he handling of the mouthguard during practices and games with dirty hands will absolute promote the spreading of…GERMS!

There you have it! A mouth guard that sits in place and that you don’t have to touch, must be a better choice. This is the thought that struck Viggy. And so she set out to compare a mouth guard that comfortably sits in place versus a mouthguard that doesn’t. Under the supervision of her science teacher, Viggy set up a controlled study where she compared two athletic teams. One team was using a conventional,  but expensive, mouth guard, where the other team was using the Protech Dent™ Mouth Guard. All the athletes had to wash their hand before putting the mouth guards in, then go about the practices as usual.  Viggy would then take the mouth guards out with gloved hands. She then took them to the lab her science teacher had set up for her in the biology department. There she cultured the mouth guards for germs. And lo and behold, her suspicion was confirmed! Because when she saw the results, it clearly showed that the Protech Dent Mouth Guard had no germs, whereas the other conventional mouthguard had plenty of them.

So not only is the Protech Dent™ Mouth Guard extremely comfortable, allowing you to speak, breathe and drink with it in place. It also prevents the spreading of nasty germs, keeping you and your teammates healthy and ready to win yet another game.

And if you ask me, isn’t winning the game what we all want in the first place?
